John Wesley Powell (24 Mac 1834 - 23 September 1902) ialah seorang askar, ahli geologi, penjelajah Amerika Barat, profesor di Illinois Wesleyan University, dan pengarah institusi sains dan budaya utama. Beliau terkenal dengan Ekspedisi Powell Geographic 1869, perjalanan sungai selama tiga bulan di bawah sungai Green dan Colorado, termasuk laluan pertama yang ditaja kerajaan A.S. melalui Grand Canyon.
Powell berkhidmat sebagai pengarah kedua Penyiasatan Geologi A.S. (1881-1894) dan mencadangkan, untuk pembangunan Barat yang gersang, dasar-dasar yang diperhalusi untuk penilaian keadaannya yang tepat. Beliau menjadi pengarah pertama Biro Etnologi di Institusi Smithsonian semasa berkhidmat sebagai pengarah Kajian Geologi A.S., di mana beliau menyokong penyelidikan dan penerbitan linguistik dan sosiologi.[1]
