Winston Francis Groom Jr. (23 Maret 1943 – 16 September 2020)^[1][2] adalah seorang novelis dan penulis nonfiksi asal Amerika Serikat. Ia dikenal sebagai penulis novel Forrest Gump, yang kemudian diadaptasi menjadi sebuah film berjudul sama pada tahun 1994, yakni Forrest Gump yang disutradarai oleh Robert Zemeckis. Film tersebut dianggap sebagai fenomena budaya dan memenangkan enam Academy Award. Ia lalu menerbitkan sekuelnya, Gump and Co., pada tahun 1995. Ia juga menulis banyak karya nonfiksi, tentang beragam topik termasuk Perang Saudara Amerika dan Perang Dunia I.

Kehidupan awal

Groom lahir di Washington, D.C., dan dibesarkan di County Mobile, Alabama, di mana ia bersekolah di Sekolah Militer Universitas (sekarang dikenal sebagai Sekolah Persiapan UMS-Wright).^[1] Ambisi paling awal Groom adalah menjadi pengacara seperti ayahnya; namun, sebagai gantinya, saat menjadi editor sastra di perguruan tinggi, ia memilih menjadi penulis. Groom kuliah di Universitas Alabama, di mana ia menjadi anggota Persaudaraan Internasional Delta Tau Delta^[1] dan ikut Korps Pelatihan Perwira Cadangan Angkatan Darat, ia lulus pada tahun 1965.^[1]

Ia bertugas di Angkatan Darat Amerika Serikat dari 1965 hingga 1967, termasuk pernah bertugas dalam Perang Vietnam (dari 66-67). Sebagian besar waktu dinasnya dihabiskan dengan Divisi Infanteri Keempat.^[1]

Kehidupan pribadi

Groom menikah dengan Ruth Noble dari 1969 hingga perceraian mereka pada 1974. Ia menikah dengan Anne Clinton Bridges pada 1987, dan mereka memiliki seorang putri.^[1]

Groom tinggal di Alabama, dan meninggal di Fairhope pada tanggal 16 September 2020, pada usia 77 tahun.^[1][3][4]
