Charles Romley Alder Wright

Charles Romley Alder Wright (* 1844 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex; † 25. Juli 1894) war ein britischer Chemiker.

Wright war Dozent für Chemie an der Medizinfakultät des St Mary’s Hospital, London.

Ab 1874 gelang ihm im Rahmen der Strukturaufklärung bei verschiedenen Alkaloiden und Terpenen die Konstitutionsaufklärung von Morphin. Hierbei stellte er durch Acetylierung des Morphins erstmals Diacetylmorphin (Heroin) her. Zur schonenden Acetylierung setzte er auch Säureanhydride wie Acetanhydrid ein.

Die pharmakologische Verwendung von Heroin ließ er von Frederick M. Pierce am Owens College prüfen.

1881 wurde er Mitglied der Royal Society.

Zeitgleich mit C. Thompson entwickelte er eine Brennstoffzelle.
